“ Put
simply, magic fabrics animate a quilt. Some suggest a light
source coming from below the surface (luminosity) or bouncing
across the surface (luster). Others imply that transparent
colors overlap to create new color mixtures (transparency). What
constitutes a magic fabric? I describe many as “shot with
light.” They usually display variations in value—light areas
among darker areas, or light-to-dark gradations—and they
typically contain warm colors.
Batiks, hand-dyes, and
hand-painted fabrics have a dappled quality, and they are among
the most effective magic fabrics. Some commercial fabrics appear
to “smolder,” an illusion that lends depth and richness to even
the simplest of quilts.”
Bio from website: “I’m often
asked how I got into writing and teaching. It’s a result of
various experiences and pursuits, starting with degrees in both
design (textile and costume) and journalism (magazine). In
addition to working free-lance for Sunset Books, I’ve been a
tech editor for Martingale (That Patchwork Place), which brought
me closer to my real passion, quilts and wearables. I’ve been
published in American Quilter (March 2009), QNM, For The Love of
Quilting, and Threads, and I’ve appeared on “Simply Quilts.” I
live in Grass Valley, in a house with a light-filled room where
I scheme and sew.

I was born in Tokyo,
Japan on March 3, 1956, the day of the Festival of Dolls, also
known as Girl's Day. I grew up, however in the United States.
In 1971 my parents sent me to school in Tokyo at the urging of
a family friend who had just returned from Africa to "go back
where he came from." That is where I learned Sachiko from my
uncle who spoke no English. I feel within my heart that my life
and art are about relationships, not accomplishments or objects.
That is all there is when we go and they are what keeps our
spirits alive into the future. The interplay between materials
quilted together and secured in place with handstitched threads
is more than metaphor, it is embodiment.
